Visit to Santo Domingo

The hotels of Punta Cana offer several guided tours of a single day without having to spend the night in the city but the price is usually quite high. Having a Rough Guide that I took out in the Dublin library we prefer to organize the visit on our own, including staying at night to live the nightlife a bit.

He bus from Punta Cana to Santo Domingo We took it at the bus terminal and for 325 pesos - the change was around 50 pesos for each Euro - it left us in the center of Santo Domingo after about 4 hours of travel.

After a disappointing walk along the Malecon, we arrive at the Colonial Zone, the historical and architectural center of the city. There we found decent accommodation for about $ 25 per head and night. We left things and took a quick shower to get rid of the sweat of the walk under a sun of justice. It didn't help much because shortly after we were sweating again through the old streets, just before it started raining heavily. It is what the tropical climate has.

The Colonial Zone is rather neglected and it mixes cathedrals, convents, monasteries and the famous house of Columbus with bars and cafes and shops of all kinds, including street vendors and large souvenir shops at more expensive prices even than in the Beach resorts where we came from.

Even so, the temptation to try to imagine how things went almost 520 years ago was undeniable, when Christopher Columbus set foot on those lands to change - for better or worse - the history of an entire continent.

In the Colonial Zone you can find what was the first house of Columbus in America, the first cathedral and the first hospital built by the Spaniards in the West Indies. The cultural wealth is completed with other constructions such as the Dominican convent, the church of Santa Clara and the Ozama fortress.

The most emblematic squares are the Plaza Colón-chaired by the statue of the discoverer- and the Plaza de España, larger and offering a beautiful view of the Alcazar de Colón. For museum lovers, highlight the amber and Atarazanas museum.

The truth is that the cultural and historical wealth of the city gives for a visit of several days.
