One of the beautiful beaches of Guarda do Embaú in southern Brazil
With this of the American cinema, whenever we think about Christmas we imagine people happy but corseted in a minimum of about 5 or 6 outerwear. That is the protective layer they need to be able to withstand the intense cold that usually crystallizes in snow and ice scenes, lit by a multitude of colored lights that adorn the wastebaskets of the beautiful American suburbs.
For the inhabitants of the northern hemisphere, the word Christmas is synonymous with family, gifts, carols ... And cold and snow.
But the men and women who live near or below the equator line have a very different concept of Christmas. Swimsuits, bikinis, barbecues in parks or houses, Santa Claus almost in balls, and refreshing baths in beaches or swimming pools. It is summer Christmas: much cooler than the icy one but that Hollywood has been responsible for hiding for so many years in a clear maneuver of destabilization and world manipulation of the first degree.
But guys ... I have seen the light. And a lot of light.
During my travels around the World, these important dates have caught me in warm and distant places twice.
In the temples of Angkor in Cambodia
Christmas 2003-04 I was surprised admiring the temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. On Christmas Eve we were invited to a traditional Cambodian dinner by the hotel staff. Tablecloth and rice combined with a thousand different things, beer and little else. It doesn't take much there to be happy.
In 2004 we received it in the famous Sydney Bay, between fireworks and dozens of hugs from unknown people, whom - we were almost completely drunk - at that time we considered family in the first degree. Then we spent a few days at the beach to recover.
In 2008 We said goodbye to the year in one of my favorite cities in this World: Buenos Aires. The streets were a real furnace and we missed the beaches of the Brazilian Florianópolis, where we had surfed and swam just a few days before.
